NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - The Virginia Marine Resources Commission will hold a public hearing Tuesday April 22 on the City of Newport News' request for a permit related to the King William reservoir project.

The King William project public hearing will be part of the Commission's regular monthly meeting, but will be heard, beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the Warwick High School auditorium.

Commissioner William A. Pruitt said the Commission's agenda would begin at 9:30 a.m. at agency headquarters, 2600 Washington Avenue in Newport News, and will adjourn about noon and resume at Warwick High School. The Commission plans to take a dinner break from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. when the King William public hearing will continue.

Tony Watkinson, Acting Chief, Habitat Management Division, said that comments on the proposed Newport News permit application are currently being accepted by the Commission and will be accepted through the public hearing. Additional details and maps related to the permit can be found on the agency's Web site.

Written comments may be sent to: Tony Watkinson, Virginia Marine Resources Commission, Habitat Management Division, 2600 Washington Avenue, 3rd Floor, Newport News, Virginia 23607, or to twatkinson@mrc.state.va.us

Based on information contained in the Final Environmental Impact Statement and recently updated Project Overview and revised drawings provided by the City of Newport News as part of their application for permit, the Commission will consider a permit for the installation of the intake structure in the Mattaponi River near Scotland Landing as well as the water distribution lines under Cohoke Creek downstream of State Route 632 and the Pamunkey River at Cousiac Marsh and the discharge structure in Beaverdam Creek upstream of Interstate 64 in New Kent County.

The City has informed the Commission that there will be no outfall structure on the banks of the Pamunkey River as previously proposed and the City has proposed to employ directional drilling to install at two crossings--Cohoke Creek and the Pamunkey River. Additionally, the intake pipeline from the shoreline into the Mattaponi River will be installed using microtunneling technology. As described there will be no disturbance of the shoreline and only the intake assembly will require any work in the river bottom.
