Public Notice:  Proposed Regulations, May 2011

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission invites public comment on the proposed amendments to regulations listed below. 

In accordance with Section 28.2-209 of the Code of Virginia, a public hearing on the proposed regulations will be held at 12:00 noon, on Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, 2600 Washington Avenue, Newport News, Virginia.  Written comments on the proposals should be mailed to Jack Travelstead, VMRC Fisheries Management Division, 2600 Washington Avenue, 3rd Floor, Newport News, Virginia 23607, by 5:00 p.m., Monday, May 23, 2011.  Copies of the proposed regulations may be reviewed at the Commission Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and may be obtained by calling the Commission at (757) 247-2248.

I.  Chapter 4VAC20-450-10 et seq. "Pertaining to the Taking of Bluefish".

The Commission proposes to amend Regulation 4VAC20-450-10 et seq., "Pertaining to the Taking of Bluefish," to establish the 2011 commercial bluefish quota as 1,113,727 pounds.  The purpose of this amendment is to comply with the federal and interstate management plans for this species.  The 2010 commercial bluefish quota was 1,213,280 pounds.

II.  Chapter 4VAC20-270-10 et seq. "Pertaining to Crabbing".
 
The Commission proposes to amend Regulation 4VAC20-270-10 et seq., "Pertaining to Crabbing," to allow crab pot and peeler pot licensees to be permitted for an alternate lawful daily time period for commercial harvesting activities.  This alternate daily time period would allow permittees to harvest crabs by crab pot or peeler pot from 4 am to 12 noon, May 1 through August 31, and 5 am to 1 pm during September.  Currently, the lawful daily time period is 6 am to 2 pm, March 17 through April 30 and September 1 through November 30, and 5 am to 1 pm during May through August.
