Publice Notice: Pertaining to Various Regulations February 2006

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission invites public comment on the proposed amendments to the regulations listed below.

In accordance with §28.2-209 of the Code of Virginia, a public hearing on the proposed amendment will be held at 12:00 Noon on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at the Marine Resources Commission, 2600 Washington Avenue, Newport News, Virginia. Written comments on the proposals should be mailed to Jack Travelstead, VMRC Fisheries Management Division, 2600 Washington Avenue, 3rd Floor, Newport News, Virginia 23607, by 5:00 p.m., Monday, February 27, 2006. Copies of the proposed amendments may be reviewed at the Commission Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and may be obtained by calling the Commission at (757) 247-2248.

Extension of the oyster season in James River hand scrape areas

On January 24, 2006 the Commission adopted Emergency amendments that extends the oyster season through February 28, 2006, only for the James River Hand Scrape Area and the Thomas Rock Hand Scrape Area. This emergency regulation will terminate on March 1, 2006.

Regulation 4 VAC 20-252-10 Et Seq., Pertaining to the Taking of Striped Bass

Commission proposes to incorporate the 2006 striped bass harvest quotas, for the recreational and commercial striped bass fisheries, in accordance with its share of the 2006 Chesapeake Bay-wide quota in pounds. The amount of the harvest quota for each fishery in 2006 is 1,554,302 pounds.

Virginia Seafood Council Aquaculture Experiment

On February 28, 2006 the Commission will review the Virginia Seafood Council proposal for continuing aquaculture experiments with the triploid non-native oyster, Crassostrea ariakensis.
