Public Notice: Pertaining to crab dredge license sales

NOTICE

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission invites public comment on a proposed amendment to its regulation pertaining to crab dredge license sales (Regulation 4 VAC 20-750-10 Et. Seq.), listed below. In accordance with §28.2-209 of the Code of Virginia, a public hearing on these proposals will be held on November 25, 1997 at 12:00 Noon at the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, 2600 Washington Avenue, Newport News. Written comments on the proposals will be accepted until 12:00 Noon, November 24, 1997 and should be addressed to Jack Travelstead, VMRC Fisheries Management Division, P. O. Box 756, Newport News, VA 23607. Copies of the proposed regulation may be seen and copied at the office of the Commission during Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 P.M. Purpose and Summary of Proposed Amendment to Regulation 4 VAC 20-750-10 ET SEQ:

Purpose: The purpose of the proposed amendment to the regulation pertaining to crab dredge license sales is to revise the criteria for limited entry into the crab dredge fishery.

Proposed Amendments:

Everyone licensed to crab dredge during the 1996/97 season will be allowed to purchase a license for the 1997/98 crab dredge season, and beyond, provided they meet the following eligibility criteria, as established below.

1. In order to purchase a crab dredge gear license one must be a registered commercial fishermen.

2. In order to purchase a crab dredge license one must have held a crab dredge license during the previous crab dredge season and shall have used his crab dredge gear for a significant amount of time, at least three of the previous five seasons.

3. All eligible crab dredge fishermen will be sent authorization letters each year, allowing them to purchase a license. This letter must be presented to the licensing agent at the time of purchase of their license.
