Public Notice March 1998: Pertaining to Summer Flounder

NOTICE

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission invites public comment on proposed amendments to the following Regulations:

4 VAC 20-260-10 et seq., "Pertaining to Summer Flounder,"

4 VAC 20-950-10 et seq., "Pertaining to Black Sea Bass" and

4 VAC 20-960-10 et seq., "Pertaining to Tautog." 

Both current and proposed measures for commercial and recreational fisheries are shown below. Please note that size limits are minimum possession size limits.

10 fish possession limit

  1. 15 inch minimum size, 8 fish possession limit, or
  2. 14.5 inch minimum size, 6 fish possession limit, and closed season to reduce landings by 8%.

Black Sea Bass

Recreational

9 inch minimum size

10 inch minimum size, and either

  1. 20 fish possession limit, or
  2. August 1 - August 15 closed season.

Tautog

Recreational

13 inch minimum size

14 inch minimum size, and either

  1. 7 fish possession limit or
  2. 12 fish possession limit with a May 1 - June 30 closed season, or
  3. 10 fish possession limit with a May 1 - June 30 closed season.

Tautog

Commercial

13 inch minimum size

14 inch minimum size, and either

  1. May 1 - August 31 closed season, or
  2. Same possession limits and closed season as recreational fishery.

 

In addition, the Commission invites public comment on proposed amendments to Regulation 4 VAC 20-950-10 et seq., "Pertaining to Black Sea Bass."  These changes are as follows:

MINIMUM SIZE LIMIT: 4 VAC 20-950-30

E. Total length shall be measured in a straight line along the lateral midline, from tip of nose to tip of tail, excluding the caudal fin filament.

In accordance with §28.2-209 of the Code of Virginia, a public hearing on these proposed regulations will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 1998 at 12:00 NOON at the office of the Marine Resources Commission, 2600 Washington Avenue, Newport News, Virginia. Written comments should be provided to Jack Travelstead, VMRC Fisheries Management Division, P. O. Box 756, Newport News, VA, 23607, prior to 12:00 noon on March 23, 1998. Copies of the proposed regulation may be reviewed and copied at the offices of the Marine Resources Commission, 2600 Washington Avenue, Newport News, during Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Persons interested in obtaining a copy of the proposal may call the Commission at (757) 247-2248.
