NOTICE OF REQUEST FOR PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN THE 2004 SHAD RESTORATION PROJECT:  The Marine Resources Commission invites WRITTEN RESPONSE as to the availability of as many as 10 individuals for capturing American shad (shad) from the Pamunkey River (unless otherwise directed by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, VDGIF) for the 2004 shad restoration project.  Project dates will be approximately March 8 through mid-May, 2004. January 2003:

January 24, 2003: The Virginia Marine Resources Commission invites public comment on a proposal and request for permit by the Virginia Seafood Council to deploy about one million triploid Suminoe oysters (Crassostrea ariakensis) at 10 locations in Virginia waters for aquaculture and subsequent marketing trials. A permit is required under Section 28.2-825 of the Code of Virginia for the deployment of this non-native oyster in the water of the Commonwealth.

December 2002:

The Commission will consider proposed amendments to regulations pertaining to red drum and shad  and Temples Bay hand scrape oyster harvest and oyster dredge weight in Pocomoke and Tangier Sounds at the December 17, 2002 Commission meeting.

The Chesapeake Bay Program has released for public comment - through January 15th, 2003 (originally December 4th, 2002) a draft Comprehensive Oyster Management Plan.  It provides a general framework and specific guidance for a strategic, coordinated, multi-partner effort to rebuild and manage native oyster populations in Chesapeake Bay.  The Plan can be found at  www.chesapeakebay.net/cop.htm.
