Terrapin Excluders for Recreational Crab Pots

terrapin Diamondback terrapins, the only turtle in the US to live in brackish waters, were heavily harvested in the late 1880s to early 1900s and are now under pressure by human development and activities on their habitat and nesting areas. A common threat to terrapin populations along the coast is drowning in crab pots, which they may enter for food or shelter. The Diamondback Terrapin is listed as "Vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) lists them as a “Very High Conservation Need".

What is a TED?
terrapin-excluderA terrapin excluder device (TED) is a rigid rectangular device, often made of bright orange plastic, fitted to the entrance funnel of a crab pot that blue crabs can enter through but most terrapins cannot. Some studies have shown that installing TEDs can reduce terrapin bycatch by as much as 80%

Do I need TEDs in my crab pots?
If you’ve purchased the 5-pot with terrapin excluder devices license for $36, you are required to have TEDs installed in every pot.
TEDs are strongly encouraged for all recreational crab pots for terrapin conservation.
Where can I get TEDs?
Many bait and tackle shops, or other stores that carry crab pots, carry terrapin excluder devices or sell crab pots with TEDs included or already installed. Please call your local bait and tackle shop to be certain they have them in stock.
You can purchase 1¾" x 4¾" TEDs from the manufacturer:
Top-ME, Phone: (207) 449-1180, E-mail: info@topmetags.com
You can make your own TEDs using heavy wire and hog rings. See instructions from VIMS on how to make your own here.
